I know we’re a broken record about this stuff but one of the weirdest things about eps 19 & 20 to me is that Dean is implied to be mourning Cas, but they never let us really see it. It’s like it’s in our peripherals but we can’t look at it directly. He’s implied to have sat in that dungeon all night long, but we never hear him talk about his feelings about any of it. We never see him finally get up and answer Sam’s calls. We hear him give a rehearsed and straightforward recounting of Cas’ death to Jack and Sam, but we never see him tell Sam what actually happened (if he ever does). We see him passed out on the floor surrounded by alcohol, but we didn’t get to see it actually happen, just the aftermath. We see him run up those stairs to get to Cas, but we never hear how he feels about being tricked that way. We never see him ask Jack about bringing Cas back (if he does). We never see him carve Castiel into the table. We see his room is still covered in empty beer bottles in the finale, but the whole ep we just see his mindset about Cas and Jack being gone which is so uncharacteristically practical and healthy that it does a 180 into being concerning. And then of course his death, which can carry its own awful implications. Especially when you consider that we were left in the dark about how Dean has actually been doing. I’m a firm believer that sometimes leaving things implied rather than shown/said can be a better writing choice at times but this is just..... a massive hole being circumvented in the last two eps that makes the whole thing feel (ha) empty. He IS mourning. We just aren’t allowed to see it.
